The 26th Annual International Miniature Art Show at Seaside Art Gallery

My two works, Sylvan Slippers and When the Night Comes, are both in the 26th Annual International Miniature Art Show at Seaside Art Gallery in Nags Head, NC.  If you can't make it in person to see the show, it is also happening online now! Each year the show exhibits around 550-600 works of miniature art by talented artists from all around the globe. Some of the world’s most renowned miniature artists participate each year! This show has a wonderful variety of fine art miniatures!

Thanks for taking the time to read about the shows I'm participating in and my work.  Spring is in the air and lots of things happening to me here on the home front.  I'm staying busy creating new work and am submitting to a few more shows this year, than last.  It's all been a slow process, but moving along.  A big change is happening this summer when will be welcoming our daughter, Gina, (and her little dog too!) who will be leaving the hot state of TX to come reside in the cool Pacific Northwest.  We'll be meeting up with her in TX and having a fun road trip back here.  We're hoping to visit the area around Santa Fe and elsewhere on our way back home.  It's all still in the planning stage but I'm sure we will have lots of fun and inspirations on the trip there and back.  We will be so pleased to have her here!

Seaside Art Gallery's 22nd Annual International Miniature Art Show

The 22nd Annual International Miniature Art Show at Seaside Art Gallery is happening online now.  I look forward to this show every year.  It's always exciting to see the wonderful variety of art from artists all across the globe.

Above are my three works in the show, shown in their frames.  The top two, Dreamer and You Too Shall Have Wings, were done in graphite and mixed media on film and are both from my series, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities. Below them is my new work, Ol' Blue Eyes, using colored pencil on a new substrate called TerraSkin.

You Too Shall Have Wings © Barbara A. Freeman

Ol' Blue Eyes © Barbara A. Freeman
Colored Pencil  3" x 3"

The miniature, Ol' Blue Eyes was inspired by the beautiful white geese we saw at the Evergreen State Fair last year.  It was the beautiful blue eyes surrounded by the orange lid that did it!  It is an Embden goose which is one of the most common breeds of geese in the United States. Guess I never got close enough to their beautiful eyes to appreciate them.  I used colored pencils with a different substrate, called TerraSkin, which you can find out more about by clicking on the name.  TerraSkin is not paper made from trees, but from stone, using no water!  I wanted to try it because I read that it accepted silverpoint really well, but it works really nicely with all mediums! There may be more use of this in the future!

This great show is a favorite of mine. I love the presentation of the entire show online. Sadly, this year their website was hacked!  They are in the process of creating a new website which will be up in time for the show on May 1st.  When Seaside's site is up, this post will link to their site as well as to my work in their online gallery.  Seaside is a very organized and well run gallery.  Not only will you be able to click on the work to see an enlarged view, but if you click on the details, it tells you the artist's name and where they're from.  There is also a thumbnail of the work in it's frame which you can click on for an enlarged framed view. The clarity of the image is perfect AND you can put it in your cart and buy the artwork online!  Just click on Dreamer, You Too Shall Have Wings or Ol' Blue Eyes to see my work on Seaside's online gallery.  *(Links will not work until after Seaside Gallery's website is up.)

Seaside Art Gallery's show is one of the top five national miniature shows that you can see in person and online.  This year the exhibition runs from May 1st through June 1st,  2013. The Open Reception is May 25th from 7 to 9 PM.  The online exhibition starts upon arrival of each artist’s work.  When the artwork arrives in the gallery, it is examined, measured, photographed and posted.  Each year, this nationally acclaimed miniature show exhibits approximately 600 works of art by artists from all around the globe. It must be spring because it's that time again for Seaside Art Gallery's 21st Annual International Miniature Art Show in Nags Head, North Carolina. This great show is a favorite of mine. I love the presentation of the entire show online. Seaside is a very organized and well run gallery.  Not only can you click on the work and it will enlarge, but if you click on the details, it tells you the artist's name and where they're from.  There is also a thumbnail of the work in it's frame that you can click on for an enlarged framed view. The clarity of the image is perfect AND you can put it in your cart and buy it online!  My work was posted online Monday morning and by around noon, I was checking on it for the link and was surprised to see that Moonbathing had already sold!!  That made my day!  Just click on Patience, Undaunted or Moonbathing to see my work on Seaside's online gallery.

Another happy event is Gina Ballew, my daughter, also has two of her mosaic works in the show.  It's her first out of state show!  Her two beautiful works,  Awaiting Spring's Arrival and The Snake Doctor can been seen by clicking on the titles or you can read about them on her blog, Pink Chicken Mosaics.  This is the first show we both have work in together!  I'm really pleased she took the plunge and put her work out there!  You can view all the work in this fabulous miniature art show on their website at, Seaside Art Gallery Miniature Art Show.

This is Seaside Art Gallery's 51st Anniversary in the original location of the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina.  This show is one of the top five national miniature shows in person and online.  The exhibition runs from April 28th through June 2nd,  2012. The online exhibition starts upon arrival of each artist’s work.  When the artwork arrives in the gallery, it is examined, measured, photographed and posted.  Each year, this nationally acclaimed miniature show exhibits approximately 600 works of art by artists from all around the globe. Some of the world’s most renowned miniature artists participate each year. Miniature art is often referred to as "the little jewels of the art world" and enjoys continued growth in popularity worldwide. Wish I could be there to see it in person! I hope if you are in the area, you will go see this great show!  Seaside Art Gallery, 2716 Virginia Dare Trail South, Nags Head, NC 252.441.5418 or 800.828.2444

My new works, Patience and Undaunted were painted in acrylic on Illustration Board.  The heron was from our outing that we took to Boundary Bay, BC (to see the Snowy Owls). The snail was from a hike we took at the Boulder River Wilderness Area.  Moonbathing is from my series, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities.

On another note, I'll have more new work and show announcements to post soon.  I have been really busy creating enough new work for all the spring show deadlines.  It's been difficult to keep up with the demands of not only creating the work, but also all the other things that go into making it a finished piece of art ready for show.  Then add all the social media to keep up with in promoting that work!  In March we traveled by train to visit my in-laws in Indiana.  They are still insisting on living independently in their own home but have become more frail.  We do worry about them, so we are trying to visit often.  To all my blogger friends, I do read about all your new work and shows, but I don't always get to reply.  You are all an inspiration!  Until next time, I thank you for taking the time to read about my work.  Happy Spring!

2011 Seaside Gallery Miniature Show

Once again, I am participating in Seaside Gallery's 20th Annual International Miniature Art Show in Nags Head, North Carolina. This great show is a favorite of mine. I love the way they handle the artists' work and their presentation of the entire show online. They are a very organized gallery. I am notified by email when my work arrives along with a list of the work, each given a number. I was always impressed with the way they presented the work in their online gallery, but now they have a new web site and it's even better! Not only can you click on the work and it will enlarge, but if you click on the details, it tells you the artist's name and where they're from, and also shows a thumbnail of the work in it's frame. When you click on the thumbnail, that view will also enlarge. The clarity of the image is perfect AND you can put it in your cart and buy it online! I shipped my work with Clip-N-Ship, USPS on Monday, got conformation that it was received today, Wednesday and a few hours later, it's up on their website! Click on Always Illuminated, Bright-eyed and Bushy-tailed or Gold and Glory to see the work on Seaside's online gallery. You can see all the work in this fabulous miniature show HERE. Thanks Seaside!

Seaside Art Gallery is located in the beautiful Outer Banks of Nags Head, North Carolina. This is their 50th Anniversary of being in this location. The show runs from April 30th through June 4th, 2011, however, the exhibition starts when the work is received. There are approximately 600 works by artists from all over the world and it is one of the top 5th national miniature shows! There will be an awards reception on Saturday May 28th from 7 to 9PM. Wish I could be there! Hope if you are in the area, you will go see this great show!

Art Beat Includes Mention of Work, "The Key"

I've just received my unsold work back today from Seaside Art Gallery's 19th International Miniature Art Show, in Nags Head, North Carolina. They always include the art review, "Art Beat" by Mary Ellen Riddle from their local paper, The Virginian-Pilot, inside the box. I was delighted to read that my work, The Key, was mentioned in this review. Here is what Ms Riddle said about that work:
"Of note is the magical graphite and mixed media work by Barbara A. Freeman. Her image, "The Key", features a raven in the woodland standing in a ring of golden toadstools. In its beak, the raven grasps a red ribbon upon which is tied a key. Behind the clearing where the raven takes center stage stands a regal tree with intricate patterns. The majority of the work is black and white with only minute bits of metallic color adding contrast to the monochromatic palette. These gem-like dots work well with the pearly sheen of the film on which the work is drawn. But don't overlook the faint purple shadow under the raven - subtle but powerful."
Wow, that really made me happy that she got that! I'm also happy to report that that particular work has sold.

Graphite and Acrylic on Film, 2 3/8" x 3"

As for now, I'm, back to working on the graphite on film of the forest and dragonfly, not a miniature, but a small work. I'll be sharing my progress on that work tomorrow. I also have some framing to complete for the festival this weekend at Live ARTS Bothell. As you can tell, it's been a very busy month! As always, thank you for taking the time to read this.

This nationally acclaimed show usually exhibits around 600 works of art by artists from all over the world. Some of the most renown miniature artists participate each year. All accepted work, including my three pieces, is currently available for pre-show sales on their exhibit website. The show runs from May 1st through June 5th, 2010 at the Seaside Art Gallery, 2716 South Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head NC. There will be an open reception with many participating artists in attendance, on May 29, 2010 from 7PM to 9PM. The Pearl will be catering the event and there will be an awards presentation during the reception. Sure wish I could be there!

If you are visiting the area, add this great Miniature Art Exhibition to your must do list! While you're there, be sure to check out my three miniatures, The Key, "Rhodie" with Bee, and my new acrylic painting, "Peek a Boo" .

I am currently working on a gift for my Mom and Mom-in law for Mothers' Day. I hope they work out, there's not much time! Also, I'll have more to say later on other shows and festivals I'll be participating in this spring. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope all your days are filled with beauty!

Coming Soon, & 4 Show Deadlines in April!

This weekend I'll be doing the isolation coat and varnish on my three new works. Then after they are dry enough, I'll have them scanned. I have completed the third work, Always, my illuminated word and will be able to show it then. If you have been following me, you may remember this one because it started out as an egg tempera painting. I had some problems with the egg tempera but liked the design, so I redid it in acrylic. I liked the way it came out, but decided I wanted to take it further. I created a tiny landscape painted on the same kind of surface, using the same colors, including gold, with the autumn theme. I'm going to "float" the work, Always on top of the piece with the landscape. In other words, the word Always is raised slightly in the space that is the sky with the landscape below. That is why it can't be shown, it needs to be varnished before I can connect the two pieces. Words! It would be so much easier to just show it! Hopefully I made all that clear. If not, stayed tuned, Always Illuminated, Coming Soon!

In the meantime, I am starting to panic! I have four deadlines for miniature art works! I'll need at least 16 or more quality fine art miniatures total for all of them! The show in Florida will end this weekend and I'll be waiting to see how many are returned from that show. Those remaining works will all be available to show in these upcoming shows, but I will still have to have new work to add to them. The shows are listed below, if you are a local artist or you live elsewhere and don't mind shipping your work. Or perhaps you are a collector of fine art miniatures and want to see the work in person, please check out the shows. Seaside and Parklane are miniature art shows only and are exhibited for a longer time period. Bothell and Edmonds are several day festivals with both miniature art and larger work. Good luck to all of you entering these fun and exciting shows! Now, it's back to my studio to get busy!

April 20th: Seaside Art Gallery, Nags Head, NC. seasideart.com

Miniature Art Society of Florida Show Opens and Other News

This weekend the 35th Annual International Miniature Art Show opened. I have five miniature works in this show, (you can see them in this blog post). I heard that sales were doing really well at last night's Collectors Preview and Artists' Reception. I hope several of them were mine! The show opens to the public today at 1PM to 5Pm. The show runs from January 17th through February 7th, 2010 at the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, 600 Klosterman Road, Tarpon Springs, FL. This is the largest miniature art show in the country and one I would love to attend. There are 850 works of art from 221 artists, in addition to the society’s permanent collection of more than 100 miniatures. There are magnifying glasses available for the complete enjoyment of these small treasures. Entries are from 33 states and 11 countries!

Other news...the prospectus is now online for Parklane Gallery's 18th Annual Miniature Art Show, in Kirkland, WA, at www.parklanegallery.com.

Also, another great miniature art show coming up is at Seaside Art Gallery in Nags Head, NC. You can find their prospectus for the 19th International Miniature Art Show on their website, at www.seasideart.com. I am planning to have work in both of these shows and will be blogging about them in the near future.

I have a new painting to share soon and another one in process. I'm sorry I've not been able to share much due to my trackball (mouse) causing me problems. I am using a loaner until my new one arrives on Tuesday. This one is different and like my new one, so I'm having to retrain my thumb! Now back to painting!

Shows Ended, Shows Starting

I can't believe a week has gone by since my last post! Sunday I took down my work from the Arts of Snohomish Gallery. I'll be picking up my work from the Parklane Gallery on Friday and will be looking out for my returns from the Seaside Art Gallery in North Carolina. However, I have the two shows/art festivals (see previous posts) coming up this month with my work in it. I'm looking forward to these two great summer festivals.

Seaside Awards and Judge's Statement

The Awards have been announced and the Judge's Statement has been posted on Seaside Art Gallery's 18th International Miniature Art Show. Congratulations to all of the winners! The show is filled with little gems. Your's truly was mentioned in the Judge's Statement in the oil/acrylic catatory:
"...This was an especially strong media category and other works I would like to recognize were: Barbara Freeman - Hay Bales..."

I am thrilled to have gotten notice for this particular work. I loved working on Hay Bales, it transported me back to the days spent in the Italian countryside. I was able to remember the smells of the autumn leaves, the sounds of the church bells, la doce vita! My heart was in this piece, it must have translated well. The show will continue until May 31st so there is still time to see this show and purchase these tiny treasures. Hay Bales is still available for purchase.
