2015 17th Annual Juried Kenmore Art Show

I'm happy to announce that my two works, First Encounter and Special Delivery were accepted into the 17th Annual Juried Kenmore Art Show, sponsored by and held on the lovely campus of Bastyr University, located on the north shore of Lake Washington and surrounded by the 316-acre St. Edward State Park.  The show theme is, "Inspired by Nature."   Entries exemplifying the show theme will be considered for the special Theme Award!

There is a WIP (work in progress) of the above drawing, Special Delivery , on my blog if you wish to read more about the process of this piece.  Both pieces were inspired by the lovely landscapes we have here in the Pacific Northwest.  I particularly love the trees and rocks that I see everywhere!  There are so many magical places to encounter, how can you not be inspired!

I am hoping now to be back in the studio on a regular basis, creating new work.  After nearly two and a half weeks of a fun filled road trip adventure, we are home with our daughter who will become a new WA resident!  It makes us happy to have her near and to enjoy her company.  As always, thank you for taking the time to read about my work.  Hope you have a great adventure filled summer!

Each summer for the month of August, local artist Shannon Leah Danks curates a show at Meyers Cafe at the Marina in Everett.  This year the theme, The Extraordinary Ordinary, is an eclectic mix featuring work inspired by the everyday, ordinary that becomes the extraordinary!  The show by local artists using a variety of styles and mediums, runs the entire month of August.  Meyers Cafe, a beautiful place to have lunch or brunch, is located at The Everett Marina, 1700 West Marine View Drive, Everett, WA. The Everett Marina is also the location of the Sunday Farmers' Market! Be sure to see the show during your visit! All work is for sale ... support your local artist!

My entry for the show, Lady and the Dragon, is a new graphite and mixed media drawing on film.  This work is not a fine art miniature because it is not to 1/6th scale. 

From the Association of Miniature Artists [AMA], "most contemporary societies have adopted a one-sixth scale guideline: Subjects should be rendered one-sixth their life-size or smaller with some leeway given to naturally small subjects (hummingbirds, butterflies and delicate flowers)."  

It would be difficult indeed to draw a tiny dragonfly to 1/6th scale, let alone a ladybug! However, this work was done in the "spirit of a miniature".  I consider it a "small work".   Work done on film does not always scan well and with this one, the color appears lighter than it does in person.  As I do with most of my drawings on film, the image is drawn on one side in graphite.  I then turn the work over and use colored pencil to add color to the work on the back side.  Then lastly, I return to the front side and add a bit of acrylic interference color to the wings of the dragonfly. They sparkle and glow as you view the work from different angles.  

I know I have not been as current in blogging as I would like.  I am still trying to catch up from all the time I had been away from home and studio.  New artwork has been slow in coming, trying to find time to be in my "creative head space"!  Life does have a way of taking you on detours.  I think the best way to cope is to look for new opportunities in the detours and keep an open mind.  I do hope to get back on track!

56th Annual Edmonds Arts Festival - Work Selected!

I'm very happy to announce that all my submissions have been selected for the 56th Annual Edmonds Arts Festival!  This year my entries have a bird theme.  In the drawing category, my new graphite work, Special Delivery, features a crow as messenger.  My work in the painting category, Snowy Visitor, has a snowy owl regally posing on driftwood.  In the miniature category, my paintings include a pelican, Catchin' Some Rays, a heron, Patience, an eagle, The Hunter, and more crows, this time as a trio in, Negotiation.  I guess you can tell, I love birds!

The Edmonds Arts Festival is a three day fun filled event that takes place over Fathers' Day Weekend, June 14th -16th, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Frances Anderson Cultural Center, 700 Main Street in beautiful downtown Edmonds, WA. The Edmonds Arts Festival is one of the longest running in the Northwest, attracting artists from across the nation.  There are artists booths outside along with performing arts and children's activities and yummy food.  My work will be in the Juried Gallery Show which is INSIDE the Frances Anderson Center.  There are different rooms exhibiting the juried work, the main gallery where my work is located, you'll find, paintings, drawings and miniature art.  Don't miss the photography and artisan work which is located in rooms a few steps up.  Also, you can find the excellent student art show downstairs. Seaside Art Gallery's 22nd Annual International Miniature Art Show

The 22nd Annual International Miniature Art Show at Seaside Art Gallery is happening online now.  I look forward to this show every year.  It's always exciting to see the wonderful variety of art from artists all across the globe. 

Above are my three works in the show, shown in their frames.  The top two, Dreamer and You Too Shall Have Wings, were done in graphite and mixed media on film and are both from my series, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities. Below them is my new work, Ol' Blue Eyes, using colored pencil on a new substrate called TerraSkin.

Colored Pencil  3" x 3"

The miniature, Ol' Blue Eyes was inspired by the beautiful white geese we saw at the Evergreen State Fair last year.  It was the beautiful blue eyes surrounded by the orange lid that did it!  It is an Embden goose which is one of the most common breeds of geese in the United States. Guess I never got close enough to their beautiful eyes to appreciate them.  I used colored pencils with a different substrate, called TerraSkin, which you can find out more about by clicking on the name.  TerraSkin is not paper made from trees, but from stone, using no water!  I wanted to try it because I read that it accepted silverpoint really well, but it works really nicely with all mediums! There may be more use of this in the future!

This great show is a favorite of mine. I love the presentation of the entire show online. Sadly, this year their website was hacked!  They are in the process of creating a new website which will be up in time for the show on May 1st.  When Seaside's site is up, this post will link to their site as well as to my work in their online gallery.  Seaside is a very organized and well run gallery.  Not only will you be able to click on the work to see an enlarged view, but if you click on the details, it tells you the artist's name and where they're from.  There is also a thumbnail of the work in it's frame which you can click on for an enlarged framed view. The clarity of the image is perfect AND you can put it in your cart and buy the artwork online!  Just click on Dreamer, You Too Shall Have Wings or Ol' Blue Eyes to see my work on Seaside's online gallery.  *(Links will not work until after Seaside Gallery's website is up.)

Seaside Art Gallery's show is one of the top five national miniature shows that you can see in person and online.  This year the exhibition runs from May 1^st through June 1^st,  2013. The Open Reception is May 25^th from 7 to 9 PM.  The online exhibition starts upon arrival of each artist’s work.  When the artwork arrives in the gallery, it is examined, measured, photographed and posted.  Each year, this nationally acclaimed miniature show exhibits approximately 600 works of art by artists from all around the globe. Some of the world’s most renowned miniature artists participate each year. Miniature art is often referred to as "the little jewels of the art world" and enjoys continued growth in popularity worldwide. I wish I could be there to see it in person! New Work - "Special Delivery"

This is the VERY beginning of the new piece, whereas I have the reference photos and a vague idea of how I want to use them.  The setting was inspired by the wonderful tree (aren't they all wonderful?) that's near the trailhead at one of our favorite hiking spots.  I'll be presenting this as a work in progress to show the progression of it. 

The drawing was done on the frosted film, Dura-lar Matte, using a range of graphite pencils with a bit of colored pencil work on the back side of the film.

 

Some of the forest background completed, you can see the detail in the magnifier below.  I use magnification to mostly only check the work at this point, but do use it for adding the fine details near the end.

Below you can also see where I've placed the beginnings of a tiny door.  It seemed a perfect spot with the dark arm above to shelter it.

I've moved further down the tree drawing the bark, mostly from my imagination.  I use the photo reference which I have up on my computer screen, for placement of form, light and shadow.  Sorry about the yellow glow to this one.  I tend to photograph these before I end an evening which can be rather late when my brain has ceased to function! 

I've placed the crow, and two more openings in the tree. Crows are amazing birds and fun to watch.  I can imagine them being messengers for the forest spirits and have used them in my work many times.

There is much more progress here with details of the rocks and twisting roots.   I've also added the scroll for the message delivered by the crow.

 

Now the crow has form and feathers!  I've created the very dark areas of the crow by working on the underside of the film.  As you can see, more work has been done on the bottom of the tree and rock.

More progress on the right side forming the plants and ferns.  I also added folds to the scroll and more detail to the crow.

Almost finished, this time adding subtle color on the underside, to the passageway in the opening of the tree, the upper door and the window. I'm not sure it shows up well in the photos.

 

At last, finishing up with the runes on the scroll and all the last minute details.  I had fun with this, looking up the rune alphabet and making the letter shapes curve with the folds of the scroll.  I really enjoyed watching this one come alive with each session.  These pieces become a meditation for me.  I hope you have enjoyed seeing the progression of Special Delivery! I know it has been a long time since my last blog post.  Rest assured, I haven't fallen off the edges of the earth, even though it often feels as though I have.  Taking care of family responsibilities has to take priority.   Wayne and I still have a lot more work to do regarding family, so new artwork will be slower in coming.  I will have work in three miniature art shows coming up.  One show is invitational and a new venue for me, which is exciting.  I will be blogging about them soon with links.  I also have two new miniatures and hope to share them soon!

The Wood Nymph - Selected for the 2013 CVG Show!

I'm happy to announce that my drawing, The Wood Nymph, has been chosen for inclusion in the 2013 CVG Show in Bremerton’s Collective Vision Gallery.  The annual CVG Show is one of the largest and most prestigious art competitions in the Northwest. Over 325 artists from 79 Washington cities submitted 896 artworks for consideration. Of these only 127 pieces were selected for inclusion in the show. Alfredo Arreguin, an internationally known painter from Seattle is the juror for this year’s competition. Next, Arreguin will choose the recipients of $7,000 in prizes going to 11 artists in multiple categories. Additional prizes include a purchase award by the Kitsap County Arts Board, a $300 People’s Choice Award and a $1,000 Best of Kitsap Award sponsored by the Cultural Arts Foundation Northwest.

Exhibition coordinator Alan Newberg says: “Looking for art that startles the viewer?... that inspires?...Art that fills the mind with intrigue or amazes with technical finesse? You think that art should challenge the social status quo, or touch the soul? Whatever you are after in your visual quest for art, the 2013 CVG Show has it all.” These 127 artists hail from every quarter of our state and exhibit all of the best qualities of contemporary and traditional art.

The 2013 CVG Show be will open to the public Jan 19, 2013 from 1 to 5 pm. The exhibit continues until Saturday, Feb. 23. The gallery will be open Tuesdays – Saturdays 10 to 5 and Sundays 1 to 5. Needless to say, I'm very excited to have my work, The Wood Nymph, (from the series, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities) included in this show. Great news that my three works have been juried into the UNCLAD show taking place in Stanwood, WA in October!  UNCLAD 2012 is the 15th Annual Art Show dedicated to celebrating the Nude Figure in art.  River Siren,  Just Between You and Me, and Keeper of the Sphere are all from the series, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities.  All three works were done using graphite and colored pencil on film using both sides of the surface.

UNCLAD takes place at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center (map) and runs from October 12th, 13th, & 14th.  The show is opens to the public, 10 am to 5 pm (Admission $5 suggested donation).  On Friday, October 12th, 6 to 9 pm, there will be the ARTISTS & PATRONS PARTY (tickets $10).  On Saturday, October 13th from 6 pm to 9 pm there will be a Wine & Cheese event with Vicki Artimovich, giving a "Nude in Art" lecture (tickets $10).  Check the website, uncladart.com to view the show online, (be sure to check out my three works in the online gallery,  River Siren,  Just Between You and Me, and Keeper of the Sphere).  It's a great looking show with over 150 artworks (all nudes) from artists across North America.  This is a show that is much anticipated, with paintings, sculpture, photography, glass and including a great Gift Shop!  Hope you get a chance to view the show in person! 

Two New Miniatures and Gallery North Mini Show

I have two new fine art miniature works to share.  Both of these were done in graphite, colored pencil and acrylic on film. My last two works of a mermaid and river siren inspired me to do one as a miniature.  I had a reclining figure that would be great from a back view, I just needed a location to put her in.  Last Tuesday, it was not raining, so around 4 we hopped in the car and drove over to Mukilteo for a walk and photo shoot.  It was low tide and as I wanted a rocky shore instead of sand or grasses, the timing was good!  There were some great clouds over the sound so I took a lot of photos for future reference.  Waiting is the result of those reference photos and my reclining mermaid idea.  My intention was to create a serene place for the mermaid or siren to be resting, gazing at the horizon, waiting for her ship to come in, or her sailor, or whatever you want her to be waiting for.  Perhaps you can hear her singing!  Waiting is another work in my series, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities.

Hideaway was inspired by a large tree I came across in a nearby park.  When I first saw it, I was so excited and knew I would be using elements of it in many works.  It has so much character in so many different views and seasons.  I've given the tree a door with a stairway as a means to reach it.  There is also another option for entry at the base of the tree.  I'm not sure if the snail is a visitor or a resident.  I think I'll let the viewer decide.  Hideaway is part of my series, Fantasy Trees.

This weekend I'll be delivering three of my miniatures, the Wood Nymph Fairies, for the 2012 Annual Miniature and Small Painting Show at Gallery North in Edmonds.

The show runs from March 1st to March 31st with an artist reception on March 4th. The show will be part of the Edmonds Art Walk, on March 15. New Work - "First Encounter"

Here she is, my latest river siren placed in a Pacific Northwest landscape.  This time I've given her a frog to keep her company.  The frog was inspired from one I spotted while on a hike at Lake 22  in the North Cascades.  Like most of my work in this series, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities, this drawing was done in graphite on film, with colored pencil on the reverse side.  Lastly, back to the front with a thin glaze of interference violet on her tail and a few other places to add a bit of sparkle.

The frog is a Cascades Frog (Rana cascadae), this one was camera shy but I did manage to get this photo of him.

Below are a few photos of the work as it progressed and then the final scanned image again at the end. I really enjoyed creating this piece.  I love drawing trees and rocks so that part was meditation for me.  The tree branches and water were another story! I think the most difficult part of the work was the water.  By the time I got that far, I was ready to be finished!  Getting a  good range of values to read as water wasn't easy.  There was so much going on with the patterns and textures in the rocks and wood that I wanted to make that area quiet.  I needed to show some rocks under the surface and on the edge as well as the quiet movement of the water near the shore without making it too active.

My intention was to create a space in which to be calm and perhaps ponder what will happen next, after the First Encounter.

Now it's on to the next project, creating fine art miniatures for all the spring shows.  Those deadlines are fast approaching!   I'm hoping to have work, fine art miniatures and larger work, in the following shows:

"River Siren" - New Work

This is my latest work, just put the finishing touches on it today.   The substrate is drafting film.  I do the graphite drawing on one side, then turning the film over, add colored pencil on the back in selected areas. Once finished to my satisfaction, I used a very thin interference violet acrylic paint on the front on the tail and a bit of gold on her ear/fin tip.  I think using the color sparsely,  gives the work an antique look.  I had fun creating the waves in the water and repeating that in her tail and hair.  I've included a few photos of the work as it progressed.  This is the final scanned image, it appears on my website without the watermark.  You can also view the work on my website by clicking on a title, or view all the work from this series together at, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities.

Happy Holidays to all my blogger friends!  The Winter Solstice is just around the corner and I know I'll be happy to see the days lengthen!  Happy New Year and I hope YOURS will be filled with wonderful things!!  Thanks for taking the time to read about my work!  

Just a note - I still have work showing locally at Miniature Masterpieces and More, Kaewyn Gallery in Bothell, till January 25th, Lowell Art Works in Everett until January 14th,  and if you are near Washington, D.C., I have work in the Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society and that show runs until December 30th.  Opening on January 15th, the MASF show runs until February 5th and I have five miniatures in that show.

These two new drawings in the series, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities, are not miniatures (under 25" square), but what I consider small works. They are both graphite drawings on drafting film with limited colored pencil on the underside and a bit of acrylic, including interference color (wings), on the front. They will be matted and framed, the total framed size will be 12" x 12".

If Snail Tales looks familiar, it's because I used the same reference drawing I did for the silverpoint work,  Earth and Sky.  I needed a place for the female figure where she would be gazing at the snail.  Often I'll have a subject or landscape that I really like and will use it in different ways.  This was a perfect setting.  It is NOT a print of the first drawing, but a new drawing with slight changes to fit the composition.

I have one more piece that I am still working on for this series which will be exhibited in the same show.  It is an acrylic painting, but will be framed in the same manner as the two drawings.  When I have them all framed and ready to go, I'll show them again here.  The two above, the new painting and three miniatures, all from the series, Wood Nymphs and Other Curiosities, will be exhibited in Kaewyn Gallery's Annual Invitational, Miniature Masterpieces and More! show.  I love this show and am always honored to be invited to participate.  I'll be blogging about that with more information later.  However, mark your calendars because the show opens on December 2nd in time for your holiday shopping!

Keeper of the Sphere and From the Highlands are both new works, this is their first show.  The exhibit takes place at the Mountlake Terrace Library Complex, (map), 23300 58th Avenue W., Mountlake Terrace, WA.  I really like this show and it is always a fun reception.  The show opens with the Artists and Patrons Preview Party on Friday, September 23rd from 7 to 9 pm, with an Awards Presentation at 7:30.  The show opens to the public on September 24th and runs to October 2nd.  The hours are Monday to Thursday, 12 to 8pm, Friday and Saturday from 10 to 5, and Sunday, 11 to 5 pm.     

Come enjoy painting, prints, calligraphy, drawings, miniatures, photography and 3-dimensional works by top local and regional artists. I look forward to another exciting venue to exhibit my work. I have several aritist friends in this show, so it's going to be a fun time with great art viewing. All work is for sale, so come on out and support your local artist!!
