Elder Street Gallery Photos

I finally got some of the photos resized that my daughter sent me of the show at the Elder Street Gallery in Houston TX. She was there early in the day so the crowds happened later. You can get a good idea how the show was hung and I was happy to see that the method of hanging was very secure.

The gallery and artists' lofts are in a beautiful historic building.

In this photo, notice the tiny miniature to the right of the man. It has a red dot indicating a sale and it is one of Mona Diane Conner's beautiful eye miniatures done in egg tempera. Congratulations Mona! *

My work has been returned promptly from the Elder Street Gallery show in Houston. I was happy to participate and glad that my daughter, Gina got to see a miniature art show in person. Thanks for putting this show on Terrence!

* Mona Diane Conner does beautiful work in egg tempera and has a mini demo on her blog. I have the book she recommends by Robert Vickery, New Techniques in Egg Tempera. It was a very nice surprise from my husband (I had it in one of my wish lists). He found it used at a very reasonable price and in wonderful condition. Now I need to find the time, but it's going to happen some day. Also, my friend Janie Olsen is going to a one day workshop on egg tempera given by Koo Schadler in December. She is also interested in learning more about this beautiful way of working. I can't wait to hear about it Janie! When she does her first work, I'll be sure to link to it!

Painting, Deadlines, & Shows

I've been chained in my studio trying to get work done for the deadlines fast approaching! Right now I am working on a painting on polymin to submit to MASF. That deadline is on October 9th, so that means the work needs to be out the door by the 5th or 6th, which is really close! The new work is another from my miniature Italian landscape series. I also just finished one (also an Italian landscape) on gessobord that is ready for the isolation coat and varnish. Besides those two, I also have a graphite on film piece that is in the works, but not quite finished. So you see, not much time for blogging, unfortunately. I also miss reading and seeing all the new work my blogger friends are doing. I know you all are doing wonderful work and can't wait to see them!

A reminder, this Friday is the Artists and Patrons Preview from 7 to 9pm with an Awards Ceremony at 7:30 at the Mountlake Terrace Show. I'll be attending.

Also, I've been asked to participate in a show with small works and miniatures at a local community college. More details on that later, so stay tuned.

I also have a few photos for the Elder Street Gallery, It's a Small World Exhibit in Houston and what my daughter thought of the show! (She loved it!) She sent them in an email, so I'll be sorting them and posting real soon.

It's a Small World, Elder Street Gallery

Yesterday I shipped my work to Houston, TX, for the Elder Street Gallery's 1st Annual International Miniature Art Show called, It's a Small World. Terrence Boggs, the gallery owner and curator of this exhibit, will be using the gallery's website to promote and sell the miniature artwork in the show, online as well as in the gallery. Their website is at this point a work in progress, but please keep checking back as he keeps adding more artists' miniatures. I'm especially excited to be exhibiting in this show because my daughter who lives in Austin will be driving down with her partner to see it. It will be her first in person miniature art exhibit! My five works on exhibit are shown below left to right, Around the Bend, Chuckanut at Lunch, the new graphite with colored pencil work, The Sentinel, bottom left to right, In Fair Condition, and Innocence.


The "call to artists" for this miniature show was handled differently. All the artwork was chosen by digital submissions, then after notification of acceptance, shipped. This is not the norm for a miniature art show. All the miniature shows I've been in, the submissions are chosen from the actual artwork. If not all the work is chosen to be in the show, the remaining is held until the closing when the unsold work and the unaccepted work are returned together. If none is accepted, they are usually all returned after judging. Mr. Boggs, at Elder Street Gallery, has chosen the artwork by digital submission to avoid having to store unaccepted artwork until the show's closing. Therefore, there will be no cost to the artist for admission fees, nor for the shipping of the work if it is NOT chosen to be in the show. He also requested the jpgs of the submitted work be 300dpi to use for promotional purposes. All work is under 25 square inches and uses the 1/6th rule. New Show Submissions

I've just submitted several of my miniatures for consideration for a show in Houston. It's at the Elder Street Gallery. This is their first miniature show, It's a Small World. Today is the deadline.... nothing like waiting till the last minute! However, I've been so tied up with local shows and trying to finish up a piece I wanted to enter.... then I had an allergy attack and was down for a day!

This show is handling things a bit differently as they are accepting submissions only by email or CD. The prospectus is a bit confusing as to the size of the files so my husband was patiently resizing my images and getting them ready for a zip file. All miniature shows I've ever entered are by actual work only. If your work is not accepted, it is held until the end of the show when all the unsold work is shipped back to you. In this show, there are no fees until the gallery decides which 3 out of the 5 they want in their show, then you send in the minis and the fees and paperwork. There is no mention of awards or juror. I am under the impression that the owners are choosing what they want in their show. I will know what, if any they want of my work by the middle of July. The show is Sept. 19th thorough Oct. 4th.
